SURVIVAL IN A CHANGING WORLD: A review to the USGS FY2000-2005 STRATEGIC PLAN

    • The U.S. Geology Survey (USGS) has made a strategic plan for the financial years of 2000-2005, to flexibly face the challenges and opportunties of the new century. In the an, the USGS positioned itself as the Nation's principal science and information agency that conducts research, monitoring and assessments to contribute understanding the natural world-America's land, water and biological resources. The two misson goals that the Strategic Plan determined for USGS are (1) Hazards and (2) Environment and Natural Resources. From the Plan we can make out that the focus of scier.ific research has changed from simply understanding the nature to solving the pmblems vital to human life, such as hazard, environment and natural resources. The objectives of geological study have expanded from the lithosphere to the whole biosphere. Geology is becoming a more useful integrated science. Serving the customer is the first aim of science research. The demands of customers guide the direction of our research. Scientific achievment depends on increasingly broad cooperation. New technology helps more success of research program.
